I am looking forward to taking part in H/D Remix again this year. (And you should try it too! There are now two choices of formats, so there are different ways to participate - sign up by Feb. 11.) I realized I needed to update my master list and claim a few things I wrote last year.

Last summer I took part in Round 9 of the Harry/Draco Last Drabble Writer Standing competition, which is always interesting and fun. The theme was Magical Artefacts. I lasted 3 weeks; failed to use anything close to the right voice for a Sorting Hat POV in week 3 but it was interesting to try on that perspective! There's also a little Teddy kidfic for The Hogwarts Express and a trapped-in-the-lift fic for Chocolate Frog Cards. Nothing higher than PG on the page, but implied more later. Anyway, I am finally getting around to posting my 3 "Magical Artefacts II" drabbles on AO3.

And I wrote a fic for H/D Career Fair called He Whose Hand and Eye Are Gentle (on AO3). G rated, but romance is building. 5250 words. Summary: Draco reads poems and sometimes writes them. Harry receives poems and sometimes reads them. Rutherford delivers poems via the scenic route. Wombat snores. Eventually, all comes together, with help from the foxes in red bibs and the sumo referee.

As usual, extremely belated posting here, but I had a lovely time again in this year's H/D Remix, and remixed a fic by [livejournal.com profile] lyonessheart called Broken. It's a story of trainee Healer Harry helping Draco through his recovery from a suicide attempt. Harry's life hadn't been so great either, but they help each other turn the corner. My fic is a sequel and a bit of a travelogue as they head off to China (Sichuan province, to be specific) for a combination of research and holiday. About 3300 words, rated G.

Mending (in the Mountains, with Monkeys)

Also, my drabble Map Kinks/Mischief Well-Managed was deftly and thoughtfully remixed and expanded by [livejournal.com profile] ustorycollector as Two Things About Harry Potter (NC-17, about 3000 words). Fun and moving and written like a string of bright compressed vignettes. I recommend it!

This past year was my first time writing for [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised, and it was a wonderful experience. [livejournal.com profile] dicta_contrion wrote me a truly beautiful gift, On Open Wings, and [livejournal.com profile] 8c left me very fun prompts to inspire the fic I wrote for her:

The Owl and the Pussy-cat.
H/D, soft R (PG-13?), about 8,000 words.
Summary: Harry, Draco, an owl, a cat, green peas, moon-cheese, an elf in a toga, a few Golden Snidgets, and some messing about in boats. Takes place 11 years after the war.

If you prefer to read in German, there is now a translation of this fic by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] nia_kantorka called Die Eule und die Miezekatze - that link is on AO3 - or if you prefer, you can read it here on fanfiktion.de.

This fic was initially inspired by Fum and Gebra. I dedicate it to the memory of the dearly beloved and handsome Fitz-kitty, keyboard-walker, chin-on-glasses-scratcher, and shoulder-leaper extraordinaire. Rest in peace, sweetest boy.

Well, it has been a week. It started off quietly and nicely with my birthday on Sunday, a rare sunny day in November, with visits with friends and some lovely notes and gifts from LJ friends. (Thank you [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore [livejournal.com profile] capitu and [livejournal.com profile] dicta_contrion, and [livejournal.com profile] nia_kantorka - I'm still debating whether to mix the fox userhead with my rabbit name/icon!) But to have a US birthday in the first week of November is always a dicey thing. Monday was the first bad news as I heard that I will quite possibly be laid off after December - I teach English to international students, and enrollment is down. Then election day Tuesday. I don't even know what to say about that unthinkable disaster. Being around like-minded people has helped, psychologically, but as for what's ahead - I guess we're going to need to be Dumbldedore's Army here. Community helps.

At any rate, it is time for me to claim my H/D Pet Fair fic, Hippomancy for Beginners, which was a lot of fun to research, and the fest was wonderful as always.

Title: Hippomancy for Beginners
Author: khalulu
Prompt: # 123
Animal: hippogriff, campchurch, thestrals, Fluffy, mention of Pictish Beast, Uffington White Horse
Rating:NC-17
Pairing(s):H/D
Warnings/Content Notes:No warnings, but lots of obscure words and phrases beginning with cock.
Summary: When Draco desperately insists on becoming a Centaur Liaison, he doesn’t know what he’s getting into, especially with that annoying hero-turned-hermit Harry Potter living right at the entrance to the Forbidden Forest. Not to mention foreign unicorn women, slavering three headed beasts, bitter brews, unexpected friendships, and the consequences of a very cocky vocabulary.
Word Count:11,500

Very belatedly catching up on my reposting. These are the 4 drabbles I wrote for this year's H/D Last Drabble Writer Left Standing Round 7. The theme was quotations from Dumbledore, which made for interesting challenges. I usually used every word the word limit allowed. As it happens, these are all G rated. One has an established relationship, one may be pre-slash, and two are Hogwarts era canon scenes from Draco's point of view.

Week 1 prompt: "Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike."
(Although Harry suffered more neglect, I felt the Dursleys did actively dislike him, so I wrote about Draco in this.)

Title: Father’s Son Read )

Week 2 prompt:"Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it."

Title: Unspeak, Speak, Oddment, Tweak Read )

Week 3 prompt: "One can never have enough socks."
My drabble was voted "most favorite" this week! :D

Title: 'Tis the Gift to Be Simple Read )

Week 4 prompt: "We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided."
(This is the round where I was eliminated, alas. The whole thing was a great experience though, with interesting prompts and a lot of strong writers.)

Title: Dividing Line Read )
khalulu: (kanji)
I wrote this little fic for this year's HP Drizzle Fest, which was very fun, but I was actually recycling an irresistible prompt that [livejournal.com profile] blithelybonny had left for last year's Career Fair at [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair. She asked for DPhil-student-at-Oxford!Draco (studying medieval literature), barista!Harry, Middle English, libraries and inkstains. I hope Padma's bookshop, The Raven's Nest, is an acceptable substitute for the libraries....

Title: What the Werbelande Wind Blew In
Author: [livejournal.com profile] khalulu
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Word Count: 4175
Rating: R
Warning(s): none
Disclaimer:Harry Potter characters are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No profit is being made, and no copyright infringement is intended.
Notes: See the end notes for notes on poems and links to medieval manuscript illustrations and raven calls. (“Awk” is an inadequate rendition, I know.) Many thanks to my dear and insightful beta [livejournal.com profile] altri_uccelli, who shared enthusiasm and links to the hilarious and sometimes smutty world of medieval illustrations. All post-beta tinkering errors are mine. Also thanks to the very patient mods.
Summary: A snowstorm blows a pale and pointy person into Harry’s coffee shop, and brings poetry (mostly medieval) into his life. And then there’s the flying cock monster, the penis tree, and the warrior rabbits.
(This is also posted on AO3.)

I hit the jackpot for sure this week - now there is a second splendid podfic of one of my fics at the [livejournal.com profile] hp_podfic_fest! The gifted [livejournal.com profile] fire_juggler has done a terrific job with Seeing Draco Malfoy (which seems to be the most popular of my fics, probably due to that tetchy Ignatius). She really makes the dialogue come alive, and distinguishes the characters' voices so well. I am honored and impressed! Give it a listen here (and admire the perfect cover art!). Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] fire_juggler!
khalulu: (kanji)
I've always loved [livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane, but never had the nerve to sign up for a gift exchange fest. Then I got a chance to write a little pinch-hit for this, the final year of the fest. I was fortunate to be writing for [livejournal.com profile] germankitty, who was generously open to a variety of H/D stories. Her prompts seemed to share a theme of romance delayed by comic misadventures, so this little fic travels in those directions - though here it's the delays that give romance a chance to grow.

Title: Ice Snakes, Glow-worms and Wolverine Stew
Author: khalulu
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Rating: R
Warnings: none, but there are a lot of snakes
Story notes: No wolverines were stewed in the writing of this fic.
Word count: 8500
Summary: Harry Potter apparently wants to talk to Draco about something, but odd events keep getting in the way of that conversation – and bringing them closer together. Featuring serpentine travels, misbehaving birds, dubious roofing projects, a gay beach, and an unexpected matchmaker.

Read here at HDS Beltane (though a couple of picture links are broken), or here at AO3.
khalulu: (kanji)
I'd offered some of my fics as possibilities for the [livejournal.com profile] hp_podfic_fest, but I had no idea that anyone was recording Beekeeping until today, when to my surprise and delight this beautiful recording by [livejournal.com profile] semperfiona was posted to open the fest! It's such an honor that someone would take the time and care to make a podfic of my work, and she's done a terrific job - I especially love how she reads the dialogue. And she found and put in the music! There are scraps of songs in it, as well as the Malawian national anthem, and she put them in! I teared up when I heard the instrumental bits of it between scenes.

This fic has had fewer readers than my others, but it's close to my heart. Harry's job, home and cat in Malawi (though not, alas, his romance with Draco) are all based on the ones I had there. I was living there when book 7 came out, and I reread the whole series there while I waited for it. (There were enough Peace Corps volunteers who'd been sent copies from home that it made the rounds.) This fic was the first one I began to write (though not the first I finished), after I came home, stumbled into fandom, and got inspired reading H/D Travel Fair fics.

And maybe after this a few more people will know a little more about Malawi, "the warm heart of Africa."

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] semperfiona, so much. Zikomo kwabasi.
khalulu: (kanji)
This is the little fic I wrote for this year's H/D Remix fest, remixing a lovely art series by [livejournal.com profile] kazuya22

Title: A Cherry When It's Blooming
Pairing: Harry/Draco preslash
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Word Count: 1950
Summary: Cherry blossoms tumble at a breath, but their subtle magic lingers. A tree at Hogwarts offers Draco mysterious solace through harsh times. This fic begins in May of Harry and Draco's fifth year at school, and ends in winter of Draco's seventh year.

Author's Note: When I saw [livejournal.com profile] kazuya22’s lovely Four Seasons series, the moonlit pink blossoms sent me on an odyssey of cherry-themed poetry. As always, many thanks to the gracious and patient mods and to my dear beta [livejournal.com profile] altri_uccelli, and thank you to the artist for such a beautiful piece to work with.

The title is taken from the American version of a traditional folksong (originally from Britain), known as The Riddle Song, which begins “I gave my love a cherry that had no stone.” The fic also quotes poems by A. E. Housman, Kobayashi Issa, Robert Herrick, Robert Graves, Stevie Smith, an anonymous Middle English poet, and Emily Dickinson, as well as the Bible, as detailed in endnotes. The quotation on wandlore is taken from J. K. Rowling’s Pottermore. This work was made for love, not money.

You can also read it on AO3 or here on LJ )
khalulu: (kanji)
This story began life as a drabble called "Lucky Star" (here, week 5), written for the H/D LDWS round 3 prompt "Deluminator". My dear friend and beta-buddy [livejournal.com profile] altri_uccelli said she could imagine Mira tracing her fingers over her name on the tapestry, and wanted to know more about her. Several years later, when the kind mods over at [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair planted a prompt for me for this year's H/D Career Fair, I finally managed to get it written. It's a story about family, healing, old losses and new loves. And my first kid fic, though not a canon kid. I take what the muse gives me, and she gave me Mira Altair at the beach.

Title: The Tapestry of Kinship
Author: khalulu
Prompt: # 199
Rating: PG-13 (a little non-explicit sex)
Career Choices: Harry: unemployed ?budding artist?; Draco: single father, architect, acupuncturist
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Warnings/Content Notes: EWE, Draco has a daughter.
Summary: Harry is at loose ends, Draco is good with needles, and Draco's young daughter wants to see a certain tapestry repaired. The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black will never be the same.
Word Count: about 14,600
Author's Notes: Why does Draco have a picture of a goat on his mantelpiece? Why does Harry have a Dirigible Plum dangling from his doorknob? What kind of house does Narcissa have in Paris? The answers, dear reader, are within.

Many many thanks to the exceedingly helpful, gracious, patient and forbearing [livejournal.com profile] hd_fanfair_mods, and to my dearest and most excellent beta-buddy, [livejournal.com profile] altri_uccelli, without whom this fic would not exist. Also to [livejournal.com profile] lamerezouille for very helpful consultation on French expressions (and goats). Errors that may have crept in from post-beta tinkering are of course all mine.

You can read this story on AO3 or read it here on LJ )

THE HP FANFIC FAN POLL AWARDS - SPRING-SUMMER ROUND 2014
Rules, Timelines, and How to Nominate a Fic

To Make Nominations/Ask Questions: hpfanficfanpollmod@gmail.com
Nomination period: April 1st - April 28th, 2014
Voting period: May 1st - June 30th, 2014
Winners announced: by July 10th, 2014

Some kind person nominated my Draco-in-Finland H/D fic Sparks from the Fox's Tail, for the Drarry Best Drama-Angst Fic category! I am thrilled and flattered and happy that maybe the story will get some new readers! (Is "chuffed" a good word to use here, O Brit-pickers?)

Thank you, whoever nominated me!

I'm not even sure what category I'd put that fic into (barring "cool Finnish magical incantations"), so it's interesting to see what someone else thinks.

Now I sort of feel I should go nominate a fic or two…

ETA Now that I'm trying to nominate fics, I see that what category you place a fic in for nomination may be partly determined by what categories you haven't already nominated something else in! So many lovely fics, so few spots….

khalulu: (kanji)
Long past time to publicize these generous and beautiful creations that others have made from a few of my fics, and thank the makers. It is such a delight and honor for me. (I am terribly slow at posting in my own journal because I get coding-phobia sometimes, but I have loved each of these since they were created.)

Podfics! Back in round 3 of H/D LDWS, I wrote 8 drabbles about Magical Items and Artefacts. To my great delight, there are podfics of two of these by [livejournal.com profile] vaysh, and of the complete set (or here on AO3) by [livejournal.com profile] sisi_rambles! Thank you so so much for this honor, o lovely and wondrous podficcers! It is so amazing to hear someone else read my work aloud.

My story Beekeeping is set in Malawi, a small country in Africa where Harry is a volunteer teacher and Draco has come to see the spectacular fish of Lake Malawi. Shortly after they run into each other by the lakeside, Harry has a dreamy dream - and here is a lovely illustration of it, with gorgeous fish art and happy naked boys, by [livejournal.com profile] kalime80 - I am so happy that she did this! It's called I dreamt of a thousand scales, and it was you, and it's like a scene of an underwater Eden. (Naked boys, like I said, so maybe NSW.)

Finally, I am incredibly grateful to and in awe of [livejournal.com profile] phonixfeder, who has now translated all four of my longer fics into German! It's such a pleasure to get the comments from the German readers, and I always learn some new expression - like "kopfkino" (when your imagination starts making mental cinema) or "Holla die Waldfee!" or "He had the Pope in his pocket." Her translations are here:
Funken, die aus dem Schwanz eines Fuchses Kommen (Sparks from the Fox's Tail in German translation)
Das Züchten von Bienen (Beekeeping in German translation)
Abraxan Wings in German translation
Draco Malfoy sehen (Seeing Draco Malfoy in German translation)

Thank each of you so much, it is so encouraging and such a privilege for me. And thank you to everyone who reads, looks or listens!
khalulu: (kanji)
Sparks from the Fox's Tail: H/D, PG-13 (romance, not explicit), about 17,000 words. Summary: Draco is frustrated with his career as a travel writer, when a mini-tirade from Mrs. Weasley and an encounter with the portrait of an intrepid great-great-great-aunt lead him to Finland to study wandless magic. Harry is – just being contrary and following his sweet-tooth, or taking the subtle route to saving the world?

This is a story of renewal, inspired in part by the genuine and gorgeous Finnish magical incantations you will find within, from a tradition that was still active in the past century.

I've finally written a slash story that passes the Bechdel test! (Includes *at least two women who *talk to each other about *something besides a man.) And it contains actual, not just metaphorical, bee-keeping, unlike my fic of that name!

Many many thanks to my extraordinarily helpful, supportive and all-around wonderful team of Finn-picker [livejournal.com profile] dark0feenix, Brit-picker [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore, and beta [livejournal.com profile] altri_uccelli, and the patient and fabulous mods of [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair.

Check out the picture and video gallery for more on Finnish traditions, dogs and northern lights (Chapter 2).

And I am delighted that this fic can be read in German translation, thanks to the awesome [livejournal.com profile] phonixfeder! Funken, die aus dem Schwanz eines Fuchses Kommen I am ridiculously late posting my fic to my journal, but at least I can announce this translation at the same time!

Title: Beekeeping
Author: [livejournal.com profile] khalulu
Rating: NC-17 overall; R for this part
Pairing(s): H/D
Summary: A few years after the war, Harry needs distance from the British wizarding world and volunteers abroad as a teacher in a poor rural school. Draco is a low-budget traveler, wandering wherever his curiosity leads him. Their paths cross in Malawi, “the warm heart of Africa.”
Warnings/Content Notes: No real warnings. Contains: sex, mostly not very graphic. Insects, ditto. Snide comment which does not reflect author’s real views on Snarry stories. Mention of previous feline violence against lizards.
Word Count: about 13,600 overall; part 1 is about 7,000
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Author's Notes: EWE. Harry and Draco are still wizards and retain all their powers, but magic is not used during the events in this story. This fic may not be seasonally accurate – that is, the relative timing of rainy season/ mango season/ school terms/ constellation visibility probably doesn’t line up properly. There’s a paraphrase of Walt Whitman’s line, “I sing the body electric.” The bee in the apple orchard art at the end is by Deborah Koch. Go here to see a picture of a Dragon Blood Peacock cichlid.

And here is a lovely illustration of Harry's dream, with gorgeous fish art and happy naked boys, by [livejournal.com profile] kalime80 - I am so happy that she did this! It's called I dreamt of a thousand scales, and it was you, and it's like a scene of an underwater Eden.

Written for and first posted here in the 2012 H/D Career Fair hosted by [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair; a couple of very minor corrections have been made, and some new images added, to this post. Many many thanks to the mods and to my gracious, skillful and encouraging betas, [livejournal.com profile] thisgirl_is and [livejournal.com profile] altri_uccelli, without whom this fic would have languished unbalanced, unpolished and unseen. Remaining flaws are all mine.
You may also read the fic here on AO3. If you prefer to listen, here is a wonderful podfic by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] semperfiona! And if you'd prefer to read this fic in German translation, you may, thanks to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] phonixfeder! I am so grateful to both of them for giving their time and talents to my story.
This fic is brought to you by the letter Z.

Beekeeping part 1 )
khalulu: (Default)
I am utterly thrilled, delighted, honored and grateful that the talented and generous [livejournal.com profile] phonixfeder has translated my H/D fic Abraxan Wings into German, and begun posting it here! And it even has reviews already! The first one is from someone who works in a hospital with people with injuries similar to the one Draco sustained, which makes me hope I represented it properly. (I put the review through an on-line machine translation because I was so curious and impatient to read it. Computer translators give a general idea of the content but also make you realize how truly necessary it is to have a human being to really do translation well!)

It makes me so happy that someone liked my fic enough to do this labor of love. Thank you so much, phonixfeder! I love trying to cross language barriers in my own life but this is not one I could have crossed on my own. And I'm so glad to have new readers for the fic.

Meanwhile I have very much enjoyed reading in [livejournal.com profile] dm_asp_fest and now in [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair - I have a fic in Career Fair this year, I'm happy to say. Wishing now that I'd found a way to Britpick the spelling more consistently, but oh well....
khalulu: (kanji)
I had a lovely time writing in [livejournal.com profile] slythindor100's last round of H/D LDWS in August and September, and won this gorgeous banner by [livejournal.com profile] wincest_drarry, and then was swallowed up by real life before I managed to post the banner and repost my drabbles. (Code-wrestling not being my favorite thing to do.) I was reminded by the notice of the upcoming Round 4, which I'll be happily reading and voting on in a day or two.

So here's what I wrote for round 3, with thanks to the mods [livejournal.com profile] sassy_cissa and [livejournal.com profile] vaysh11 (so well-run, and such fabulous prompts!) and other writers (met some terrific writers!) and readers/commenters/voters. The theme was Magical Items and Artefacts, and the drabbles run the gamut. There's wartime angst, sweet pre-slash by the seaside, snarky first seductions and established (or re-establishing) relationships. Drabbles are below cuts (and now you can also read them on AO3. Of course the boys belong to JK Rowling, and I get pleasure, not money, from them.

There's also a fascinating remix of Week 2 "Hogwarts Reunion", The first of all pleasures (Until the Glass Begins to Fly Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] megyal, who took my little wisp of a drabble and spun it into something wondrous.

Week 1: Invisibility Cloak Uncloaked, PG, 335 words )
Week 2: Mirror of Erised Hogwarts Reunion, R, 200 words )
Week 3: Time-Turner Turning Toward the Morning, G, 350 words ) with Vaysh's lovely podfic

Week 4: Marauder's Map Map Kinks / Mischief Well Managed, PG-13, 200 words )
Week 5: Deluminator Lucky Star, G, 450 words ) and as another lovely podfic by Vaysh

Week 6: Hand of Glory Outstretched, Alive, PG-13, 150 words )
Week 7: Quick-Quotes Quill Pen Porn, R, 210 words )
Week 8: Golden Snitch Quidditch for Lovers (Pillow Talk), R, 100 words )
