I am looking forward to taking part in H/D Remix again this year. (And you should try it too! There are now two choices of formats, so there are different ways to participate - sign up by Feb. 11.) I realized I needed to update my master list and claim a few things I wrote last year.
Last summer I took part in Round 9 of the Harry/Draco Last Drabble Writer Standing competition, which is always interesting and fun. The theme was Magical Artefacts. I lasted 3 weeks; failed to use anything close to the right voice for a Sorting Hat POV in week 3 but it was interesting to try on that perspective! There's also a little Teddy kidfic for The Hogwarts Express and a trapped-in-the-lift fic for Chocolate Frog Cards. Nothing higher than PG on the page, but implied more later. Anyway, I am finally getting around to posting my 3 "Magical Artefacts II" drabbles on AO3.
And I wrote a fic for H/D Career Fair called He Whose Hand and Eye Are Gentle (on AO3). G rated, but romance is building. 5250 words. Summary: Draco reads poems and sometimes writes them. Harry receives poems and sometimes reads them. Rutherford delivers poems via the scenic route. Wombat snores. Eventually, all comes together, with help from the foxes in red bibs and the sumo referee.

Jul. 2nd, 2017 05:25 pmThe 9th round of the Harry/Draco Last Drabble Writer Standing is looking for more writers to sign up! Sign-ups have been extended through Wednesday. It's a competition, yes, but a super-supportive one with participants and readers all being very generous to each other, and it's a fun challenge. Each week all participants get the same prompt and word limit and have about three days to write the drabble, then people read (fun!) and vote for most and least favorite (which can be hard), the field of writers becomes smaller (the sad part) and there's a new prompt. I've done it twice. This year's theme is Magical Items and Artefacts. I was planning to just be a reader this year but if they are still needing participants I might sign up at the last minute.... I just signed up! I encourage you, anyone out there reading this, to join the fun! Just click on the pic below.

hd_remixWell, it has been a week. It started off quietly and nicely with my birthday on Sunday, a rare sunny day in November, with visits with friends and some lovely notes and gifts from LJ friends. (Thank you birdsofshore capitu and dicta_contrion, and nia_kantorka - I'm still debating whether to mix the fox userhead with my rabbit name/icon!) But to have a US birthday in the first week of November is always a dicey thing. Monday was the first bad news as I heard that I will quite possibly be laid off after December - I teach English to international students, and enrollment is down. Then election day Tuesday. I don't even know what to say about that unthinkable disaster. Being around like-minded people has helped, psychologically, but as for what's ahead - I guess we're going to need to be Dumbldedore's Army here. Community helps.
At any rate, it is time for me to claim my H/D Pet Fair fic, Hippomancy for Beginners, which was a lot of fun to research, and the fest was wonderful as always.

I learned about this from seeing nia_kantorka's darling Hedwig perched on a teacup, and couldn't resist. The result is below. I used my laptop to take the picture, which means you need a mirror to read the writing, oops! Secret code!
You should go check out the other art, which stars a wide range of characters including the Giant Squid, Peeves and Mrs. Norris, and ranges from adorable (some created by kids) to very funny to teacup porn. You can even vote for funniest/most creative, sexiest, and your overall fav.

Jul. 23rd, 2016 11:11 amA belated post just to mention what an utterly lovely time I had at Leviosa. The people! It was so wonderful to meet people and I'm not even going to try to name everyone, because I'm afraid I'll goof and miss some - but it was my great joy to meet and room with Vaysh, and to meet Dicta_contrion, and FantasyFiend09, and Writcraft, and Alisanne, and Amorette, and Sassy_Cissa, and to make new friends like Persephoneapple and nuclearpolymer, and see old friends like pir8fancier and oldenuf2knowbetter. All of the programming was great and my only regret is not having a Time-turner so I could go to several things at once. (And a Port-key so I could have arrived sooner and stayed longer!) The slash and LGBTQIA panels were great, as were some on issues of race and intersectionality, and there were fun things like the Snape debate and video showing by the makers of Snape and the Marauders, and interesting things like information on writing query letters, something I knew nothing about. And I got a great new book called Snape by Lorrie Kim (drinkingcocoa?), which is insightful and completely on-target about how flawed, tormented, abusive, brave, brilliant, and dedicated he was and what an impossible position he was in. Also got a bookbag that quotes Hermione: "When in doubt, go to the library," and was tempted by the election stuff: Granger/Lovegood 2016!
Maybe because Leviosa was so welcoming, I'm actually thinking for the first time about signing up for h/d erised. Gift exchange fests have always made me nervous in a way that prompt based fests do not. Problem is, I need a long gestation time, and I have 2 fics to finish before then, one of which is still in notes-and-ideas-gathering stage.

I am awed, honored, moved and delighted by the remix of my fic Sparks from the Fox's Tail which has just posted on hd_remix. It's called Aamu is Dreaming and it's phenomenal. The fic itself is short, just 1600 perfect words, but it's dense with meaning. In my fic, Draco goes to Finland to study wandless magic in the Finnish magical tradition. Aamu is an elderly neighbor of his host family, who is a seer. This remix is the story of Draco (and Narcissa, and Harry) as seen in Aamu's vision and through the lens of her understanding of Finnish legend. In particular the story of Lemminkäinen, a reckless young hero who dies and is revived by his mother's perseverance, with the help of a bee that flies to heaven and back.
One of the greatest pleasures in writing is to feel that the audience truly understands, and in this remix I felt the author understood parts of my story even better than I did myself. And in addition, this is a masterful writer. I really look forward to learning who it is!

Very belatedly catching up on my reposting. These are the 4 drabbles I wrote for this year's H/D Last Drabble Writer Left Standing Round 7. The theme was quotations from Dumbledore, which made for interesting challenges. I usually used every word the word limit allowed. As it happens, these are all G rated. One has an established relationship, one may be pre-slash, and two are Hogwarts era canon scenes from Draco's point of view.

(Although Harry suffered more neglect, I felt the Dursleys did actively dislike him, so I wrote about Draco in this.)
