Well, it has been a week. It started off quietly and nicely with my birthday on Sunday, a rare sunny day in November, with visits with friends and some lovely notes and gifts from LJ friends. (Thank you [ profile] birdsofshore [ profile] capitu and [ profile] dicta_contrion, and [ profile] nia_kantorka - I'm still debating whether to mix the fox userhead with my rabbit name/icon!) But to have a US birthday in the first week of November is always a dicey thing. Monday was the first bad news as I heard that I will quite possibly be laid off after December - I teach English to international students, and enrollment is down. Then election day Tuesday. I don't even know what to say about that unthinkable disaster. Being around like-minded people has helped, psychologically, but as for what's ahead - I guess we're going to need to be Dumbldedore's Army here. Community helps.

At any rate, it is time for me to claim my H/D Pet Fair fic, Hippomancy for Beginners, which was a lot of fun to research, and the fest was wonderful as always.

Title: Hippomancy for Beginners
Author: khalulu
Prompt: # 123
Animal: hippogriff, campchurch, thestrals, Fluffy, mention of Pictish Beast, Uffington White Horse
Warnings/Content Notes:No warnings, but lots of obscure words and phrases beginning with cock.
Summary: When Draco desperately insists on becoming a Centaur Liaison, he doesn’t know what he’s getting into, especially with that annoying hero-turned-hermit Harry Potter living right at the entrance to the Forbidden Forest. Not to mention foreign unicorn women, slavering three headed beasts, bitter brews, unexpected friendships, and the consequences of a very cocky vocabulary.
Word Count:11,500

For this year's [ profile] hp_drizzle fest, which was very fun as always, I wrote a Potterverse version of the Norse folk tale, East of the Sun and West of the Moon. It's light and was a lot of fun to write. I recommend reading the original tale as well!

Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, (side) Millicent/Pansy
Word Count: 5979
Rating: PG
Warning(s): None, although some characters remark often about nose length, which might be rude. But it will be seen that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Summary: One stormy Thursday evening, a big white bear named Draco turns up to carry Harry away from the dreadful Dursleys. They get along fairly happily together until one night Harry’s curiosity gets the better of him, and Draco is whisked away to his wicked aunt’s castle, East of the Sun and West of the Moon. It will take a strong wind to bring Harry that far…..

Okay my lucky f-list, you get to see why I sign up to produce fic, not art. [ profile] akatnamedeaster had a YOU CAN draw!!! Challenge!! for anyone (explicitly including people who feel "I can't draw!") to draw an HP character and a cup of tea (or coffee), and post it. I learned about this from seeing [ profile] nia_kantorka's darling Hedwig perched on a teacup, and couldn't resist. The result is below. I used my laptop to take the picture, which means you need a mirror to read the writing, oops! Secret code!

Crookshanks and tea

You should go check out the other art, which stars a wide range of characters including the Giant Squid, Peeves and Mrs. Norris, and ranges from adorable (some created by kids) to very funny to teacup porn. You can even vote for funniest/most creative, sexiest, and your overall fav.

Also - in just a couple of days, we'll have fun [ profile] hp_drizzle to look forward to! It's a fun way to peek into other corners of the fandom. Or to find a home for that fic you want to write, if you can finagle some connection to the weather....

In my tradition of taking a ridiculously long time to re-post my fest fics in my journal, here is my entry in this year's wonderful H/D Remix fest. If you'd like to see it in Russian translation, someone named Ara-Ara has made one! Remix had some wonderful work this year, and I had the extraordinary good fortune also to have my fic Sparks from the Fox's Tail given a gorgeous remix by [ profile] fantasyfiend09, called Aamu is Dreaming.

Title: The Lily, the Violet, the Tiny Babe
Author: [ profile] khalulu
Pairing: H/D
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Story notes: A remix of [ profile] sassy_cissa's loving little story The Scent of Violets, from Lily Evans Potter's point of view. EWE, implied mpreg.
Words: 1324
Summary: From beyond the Veil, she senses that her son Harry needs her – but who is that very blond baby in his arms? Learning that she is a grandmother takes Lily on an emotional journey.

Read it on AO3 or in my journal here )

A belated post just to mention what an utterly lovely time I had at Leviosa. The people! It was so wonderful to meet people and I'm not even going to try to name everyone, because I'm afraid I'll goof and miss some - but it was my great joy to meet and room with Vaysh, and to meet Dicta_contrion, and FantasyFiend09, and Writcraft, and Alisanne, and Amorette, and Sassy_Cissa, and to make new friends like Persephoneapple and nuclearpolymer, and see old friends like pir8fancier and oldenuf2knowbetter. All of the programming was great and my only regret is not having a Time-turner so I could go to several things at once. (And a Port-key so I could have arrived sooner and stayed longer!) The slash and LGBTQIA panels were great, as were some on issues of race and intersectionality, and there were fun things like the Snape debate and video showing by the makers of Snape and the Marauders, and interesting things like information on writing query letters, something I knew nothing about. And I got a great new book called Snape by Lorrie Kim (drinkingcocoa?), which is insightful and completely on-target about how flawed, tormented, abusive, brave, brilliant, and dedicated he was and what an impossible position he was in. Also got a bookbag that quotes Hermione: "When in doubt, go to the library," and was tempted by the election stuff: Granger/Lovegood 2016!

Maybe because Leviosa was so welcoming, I'm actually thinking for the first time about signing up for h/d erised. Gift exchange fests have always made me nervous in a way that prompt based fests do not. Problem is, I need a long gestation time, and I have 2 fics to finish before then, one of which is still in notes-and-ideas-gathering stage.

I confess to googling for some of these... I was tagged by [ profile] vaysh, so here goes:

Begin the next answer with the last letter of the previous answer.

Anyone who reads this is welcome to do it, and maybe I'll tag [ profile] lokifan because she often likes memes (just if you feel like it!), and some friends I seldom see post anymore, just in hopes of hearing a peep from them... [ profile] icmezzo and [ profile] omi_ohmy. No pressure, hope you're well!

hello all!

Well it looks like I'm going to Leviosa after all! Does anyone need a roommate? I will probably be there Thurs, Fri and Sat night. I don't mind sharing with several people if anyone is looking to keep costs low. I'm a quiet person.

I am awed, honored, moved and delighted by the remix of my fic Sparks from the Fox's Tail which has just posted on [ profile] hd_remix. It's called Aamu is Dreaming and it's phenomenal. The fic itself is short, just 1600 perfect words, but it's dense with meaning. In my fic, Draco goes to Finland to study wandless magic in the Finnish magical tradition. Aamu is an elderly neighbor of his host family, who is a seer. This remix is the story of Draco (and Narcissa, and Harry) as seen in Aamu's vision and through the lens of her understanding of Finnish legend. In particular the story of Lemminkäinen, a reckless young hero who dies and is revived by his mother's perseverance, with the help of a bee that flies to heaven and back.

One of the greatest pleasures in writing is to feel that the audience truly understands, and in this remix I felt the author understood parts of my story even better than I did myself. And in addition, this is a masterful writer. I really look forward to learning who it is!

Title: Aamu is Dreaming
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco

Summary: This is the story of Sparks from the Fox’s Tail by khalulu from the pov of Aamu the seer.

The talented iuventas94 made a lovely drawing of a scene from my fic The Tapestry of Kinship. Mira Altair (Draco's young daughter) is finding her name on the Black family tree, on the tapestry at Harry's house in Grimmauld Place. She is just adorable seen from the back, with corkscrew black curls and her dress a bit askew and little ankle socks. See it here on Deviant Art and leave the artist some love!

Very belatedly catching up on my reposting. These are the 4 drabbles I wrote for this year's H/D Last Drabble Writer Left Standing Round 7. The theme was quotations from Dumbledore, which made for interesting challenges. I usually used every word the word limit allowed. As it happens, these are all G rated. One has an established relationship, one may be pre-slash, and two are Hogwarts era canon scenes from Draco's point of view.

Week 1 prompt: "Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike."
(Although Harry suffered more neglect, I felt the Dursleys did actively dislike him, so I wrote about Draco in this.)

Title: Father’s Son Read )

Week 2 prompt:"Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it."

Title: Unspeak, Speak, Oddment, Tweak Read )

Week 3 prompt: "One can never have enough socks."
My drabble was voted "most favorite" this week! :D

Title: 'Tis the Gift to Be Simple Read )

Week 4 prompt: "We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided."
(This is the round where I was eliminated, alas. The whole thing was a great experience though, with interesting prompts and a lot of strong writers.)

Title: Dividing Line Read )
khalulu: (kanji)
I wrote this little fic for this year's HP Drizzle Fest, which was very fun, but I was actually recycling an irresistible prompt that [ profile] blithelybonny had left for last year's Career Fair at [ profile] hd_fan_fair. She asked for DPhil-student-at-Oxford!Draco (studying medieval literature), barista!Harry, Middle English, libraries and inkstains. I hope Padma's bookshop, The Raven's Nest, is an acceptable substitute for the libraries....

Title: What the Werbelande Wind Blew In
Author: [ profile] khalulu
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Word Count: 4175
Rating: R
Warning(s): none
Disclaimer:Harry Potter characters are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No profit is being made, and no copyright infringement is intended.
Notes: See the end notes for notes on poems and links to medieval manuscript illustrations and raven calls. (“Awk” is an inadequate rendition, I know.) Many thanks to my dear and insightful beta [ profile] altri_uccelli, who shared enthusiasm and links to the hilarious and sometimes smutty world of medieval illustrations. All post-beta tinkering errors are mine. Also thanks to the very patient mods.
Summary: A snowstorm blows a pale and pointy person into Harry’s coffee shop, and brings poetry (mostly medieval) into his life. And then there’s the flying cock monster, the penis tree, and the warrior rabbits.

I hit the jackpot for sure this week - now there is a second splendid podfic of one of my fics at the [ profile] hp_podfic_fest! The gifted [ profile] fire_juggler has done a terrific job with Seeing Draco Malfoy (which seems to be the most popular of my fics, probably due to that tetchy Ignatius). She really makes the dialogue come alive, and distinguishes the characters' voices so well. I am honored and impressed! Give it a listen here (and admire the perfect cover art!). Thank you, [ profile] fire_juggler!

I've always loved [ profile] hds_beltane, but never had the nerve to sign up for a gift exchange fest. Then I got a chance to write a little pinch-hit for this, the final year of the fest. I was fortunate to be writing for [ profile] germankitty, who was generously open to a variety of H/D stories. Her prompts seemed to share a theme of romance delayed by comic misadventures, so this little fic travels in those directions - though here it's the delays that give romance a chance to grow.

Title: Ice Snakes, Glow-worms and Wolverine Stew
Author: khalulu
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Rating: R
Warnings: none, but there are a lot of snakes
Story notes: No wolverines were stewed in the writing of this fic.
Word count: 8500
Summary: Harry Potter apparently wants to talk to Draco about something, but odd events keep getting in the way of that conversation – and bringing them closer together. Featuring serpentine travels, misbehaving birds, dubious roofing projects, a gay beach, and an unexpected matchmaker.

Read here at HDS Beltane (though a couple of picture links are broken), or here at AO3.

I'd offered some of my fics as possibilities for the [ profile] hp_podfic_fest, but I had no idea that anyone was recording Beekeeping until today, when to my surprise and delight this beautiful recording by [ profile] semperfiona was posted to open the fest! It's such an honor that someone would take the time and care to make a podfic of my work, and she's done a terrific job - I especially love how she reads the dialogue. And she found and put in the music! There are scraps of songs in it, as well as the Malawian national anthem, and she put them in! I teared up when I heard the instrumental bits of it between scenes.

This fic has had fewer readers than my others, but it's close to my heart. Harry's job, home and cat in Malawi (though not, alas, his romance with Draco) are all based on the ones I had there. I was living there when book 7 came out, and I reread the whole series there while I waited for it. (There were enough Peace Corps volunteers who'd been sent copies from home that it made the rounds.) This fic was the first one I began to write (though not the first I finished), after I came home, stumbled into fandom, and got inspired reading H/D Travel Fair fics.

And maybe after this a few more people will know a little more about Malawi, "the warm heart of Africa."

Thank you, [ profile] semperfiona, so much. Zikomo kwabasi.

The (sadly, final) year of the HDS Beltane fest has wrapped up over at[ profile] hds_beltane, and I'm going to see if I can get a few recs in before reveals. This fest celebrates any combination of Harry, Draco and Snape, from gen to pre-slash and slash. There is always high quality, inventive and well-written work in this fest, and sometimes it doesn't reach the audience it deserves. Here are my favorites (in posting order) from the other still-anonymous writers and artists. Read more here. )

This is the little fic I wrote for this year's H/D Remix fest, remixing a lovely art series by [ profile] kazuya22

Title: A Cherry When It's Blooming
Pairing: Harry/Draco preslash
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Word Count: 1950
Summary: Cherry blossoms tumble at a breath, but their subtle magic lingers. A tree at Hogwarts offers Draco mysterious solace through harsh times. This fic begins in May of Harry and Draco's fifth year at school, and ends in winter of Draco's seventh year.

Author's Note: When I saw [ profile] kazuya22’s lovely Four Seasons series, the moonlit pink blossoms sent me on an odyssey of cherry-themed poetry. As always, many thanks to the gracious and patient mods and to my dear beta [ profile] altri_uccelli, and thank you to the artist for such a beautiful piece to work with.

The title is taken from the American version of a traditional folksong (originally from Britain), known as The Riddle Song, which begins “I gave my love a cherry that had no stone.” The fic also quotes poems by A. E. Housman, Kobayashi Issa, Robert Herrick, Robert Graves, Stevie Smith, an anonymous Middle English poet, and Emily Dickinson, as well as the Bible, as detailed in endnotes. The quotation on wandlore is taken from J. K. Rowling’s Pottermore. This work was made for love, not money.

You can also read it on AO3 or here on LJ )

This is my first time participating in a remix, and clearly the remix gods and mods have smiled upon me, because not only did I have gorgeous work to choose from in making my own remix, but some incredibly gifted mystery author has taken a little scrap of a drabble I wrote about Harry, Draco and the Mirror of Erised and created a fascinating, insightful, and beautifully written story called The first of all pleasures: Until the Glass Begins to Fly at [ profile] hd_remix. (Or you can go directly to it on AO3 here.)

Summary: The Room of Requirement and the Mirror of Erised gave Harry what he really wanted, and exacted a drastic price. Rated R. 5700 words.

There's a really intriguing premise; a sleek sci-fi vibe to descriptions of Draco's mission and equipment that somehow fits seamlessly with the world of VERY sentient magic he must confront; deeply empathetic understanding of vulnerability, need, desire, maturity and forgiveness; and just flat-out word-perfect writing in every line that's a delight to read. Even though I wrote the drabble this bounced off of, I couldn't predict the ending, but I was deeply satisfied with it when it came.

So I encourage you to do yourself a favor and go read this, and spread the word!
