The (sadly, final) year of the HDS Beltane fest has wrapped up over at[livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane, and I'm going to see if I can get a few recs in before reveals. This fest celebrates any combination of Harry, Draco and Snape, from gen to pre-slash and slash. There is always high quality, inventive and well-written work in this fest, and sometimes it doesn't reach the audience it deserves. Here are my favorites (in posting order) from the other still-anonymous writers and artists. Read more here. )

This is my first time participating in a remix, and clearly the remix gods and mods have smiled upon me, because not only did I have gorgeous work to choose from in making my own remix, but some incredibly gifted mystery author has taken a little scrap of a drabble I wrote about Harry, Draco and the Mirror of Erised and created a fascinating, insightful, and beautifully written story called The first of all pleasures: Until the Glass Begins to Fly at [livejournal.com profile] hd_remix. (Or you can go directly to it on AO3 here.)

Summary: The Room of Requirement and the Mirror of Erised gave Harry what he really wanted, and exacted a drastic price. Rated R. 5700 words.

There's a really intriguing premise; a sleek sci-fi vibe to descriptions of Draco's mission and equipment that somehow fits seamlessly with the world of VERY sentient magic he must confront; deeply empathetic understanding of vulnerability, need, desire, maturity and forgiveness; and just flat-out word-perfect writing in every line that's a delight to read. Even though I wrote the drabble this bounced off of, I couldn't predict the ending, but I was deeply satisfied with it when it came.

So I encourage you to do yourself a favor and go read this, and spread the word!

I left the prompt for this (first prompt I've ever left) and this story fulfills it in a way that is so profound, moving, quirkily funny at times, insightful and beautifully written, I'm overwhelmed. A story about healing. I have no idea who the author is, but someone whose work I'll follow, for sure. When I went to comment on things I loved, it was just studded with them. If you want a partial list scroll down to my comment amongst the other raves, but to avoid spoilers here I'll just say do yourself a favor and read this. (Note - you do not need to love poetry or feel that you understand the prompt's poem to appreciate this fic - it was the seed of inspiration, but the fic is clear and accessible prose.)

Kiss the Joy (Until the Sun Rise)

Summary: The Room of Requirement was severely damaged in the war, but not so much that it could not provide for one lost student and another young hero—especially when they needed each other most of all.
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~38,000
Author's Notes: As we all know, the theme of this fest is “Bound to You.” More specifically, the prompt I chose asked for “freedom from bondage,” based on the lovely poem “Eternity,” by William Blake. As it is quite short, I’ll reprint it here:

He who binds to himself a joy
Does the winged life destroy
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity's sun rise.

I just realized that if I waited til the end of the month for a rec wrap-up for [livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane, many people would already be submerged in Smoochfest. So let me rec this very fun, original, quirky and generally delightful fic called Good Training. The year after the war, "the wraith of Snape" is wreaking havoc at Hogwarts. To appease it, Harry (struggling as a junior Auror) and Draco (an 8th year student) are sent on a quest, which begins deep in the waters of the Black Lake. They have to pilot a cumbersome little submarine tent while also navigating their awkward relationship with each other. Harry alternates between brash enthusiasm and confusion. Draco is diffident at first but turns out to be skilled at international mer-people diplomacy, which is crucial to the success of their quest. They stumble through their uncertainties toward a better future together. Written with verve, humor, and thoughtfulness. Plus - learn more about mer-culture! Do yourself a favor and give this fic some love!

Also fun - Turn Alight, a fic in which Harry and Draco must fix a "broken" Beltane by, well, what do you think. Including antlers on an alice-band! And Beltane Magic,a fic with some charming PG rated Beltane rituals for children, where Harry and Draco are first brought together through Teddy. And Essential Cores, an art piece with some lovely wand-magic tattoos.

And a beautiful Draco - Snape story, sun-stepping with my dance shoes on, with a lonely Draco doing his best to redeem himself in his own eyes at least, and a portrayal of Snape's strong, suspicious mother.

[livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane is such a high quality fest, and doesn’t seem to have as many readers as the works merit, so I’m posting some recs before reveals. All of these are well-written, and many are funny as well – I’ll start with a few that aren’t primarily humorous.

Go here for recs. ) Enjoy!
